秋の訪れ…そして冬の気配

着物研究家のシーラ・クリフです。

私は散歩に出かけるのが大好きなんですが、日が短くなって地面にたくさんの葉っぱが落ちていることに気づきました。紅葉が深まりましたね。今年もまた、袷の着物で心地よく過ごせるのがとても嬉しいです。この数週間は、私は茶色とオレンジ色の着物と、金色や黄色のアクセサリーで楽しんでいます。

でも、冬はいよいよ近づいています。ひと月後にはクリスマスツリーを出して、家族と一緒に祝うための鶏肉をローストしていると思います。そうしたら秋色の着物はしまって、冬用の着物を着始めます。冬の花といえば「椿」と「梅」です。私はお花が綺麗な「椿」の着物を何枚か所有しています。お正月は梅の花を着るのが好きです。松、梅、竹の着物は、あらゆる祝い事に最適です。寒い時期に、幸せな気分にさせてくれます。

気分が上がる訪問着

特別なイベントやパーティーに、優雅に訪問着を着ることができるのはとても素晴らしいことです。黒留袖を着る機会は少ないですが、訪問着を着る機会はまだまだあります。着る度に気分もあがります。私のお気に入りは、友禅染め職人の親友が染めてくれたもので、鳳凰が描かれています。他に白の訪問着も所有していて、それには流水文様が描かれています。これらは新刊のスタイルブックに掲載されています。とっておきの場所で着ることができる訪問着があると、いっそう思い出深い日になりますね。

訪問着のはじまりはデパートから？

訪問着の歴史がかなり短くて驚きました。20世紀はじめ（大正時代）に、デパートが企画した新商品でした。それまで存在していたのはフォーマルの着物とウォーキングウェア（散歩着）だけで、間が何もありませんでした。デパートはそのギャップを埋めるための「訪問着」を考案しました。それまで訪問着がなかったなんて想像できません。

やっと、他の人たちと会っても大丈夫になってきたみたいです。今年の冬は、できるだけ機会を設けてマイ訪問着を着たいと思います。皆さんも、ぜひ何らかの機会を見つけて楽しんでくださいね。

I love to go out walking and I have noticed that the days are getting shorter and there are a lot of leaves on the ground. There are quite a lot of red leaves appearing too. I am very happy to be comfortable wearing awase kimono again. I have been enjoying browns and oranges and wearing golden or yellow accessories these last few weeks. But now winter is really on the way. In another month I will be getting out the Christmas tree and thinking about roasting a chicken to celebrate with my family. I will leave behind my autumn coloured kimono and start to wear winter themed ones. Winter flowers are camellias and plum blossoms. I have several kimono with camellias as it is a beautiful flower. After New Year I like to wear plum blossom. Kimono with pine, plum and bamboo are also great for celebrations of all kinds. They make me feel happy in the colder months.

It is really nice if you have a special event or party and can wear an elegant homongi. While there are not many occasions to wear a kurotomesode, there are more occasions where it is possible to wear a homongi. It always makes me feel special to wear one. My favorite one is dyed by a dear friend who is a yuzen dyer. It has a phoenix on it. I also have a white one which I love, with abstract flowing water on it. These are in my new style book. Having a homongi to wear on special occasions really makes the day more memorable. I was surprised to learn that the history of homongi is rather short. They were a new product promoted by large department stores in the early 20th Century. Before that there were formal kimono and walking wear, (sanpogi), but nothing really in between. The department stores thought of homongi to fill that gap. It is hard to imagine that there were no homongi before that. Finally it seems safe to meet with other people again. I will be hoping for special occasions to wear my homongi this winter, and I hope you will find some time to enjoy wearing one too.
