着物の魅力は柄にあり

着物研究家のシーラ・クリフです。

私が着物で本当に好きなことのひとつは、柄がたくさんあることです。50年、60年前は、みんな花柄などを着ていたものですが、今のファストファッションはほとんどが無地。最近では、ハワイアンシャツに柄があるくらいで、それ以外はあまり見かけません。着物は形があまり変わらないからこそ、見える部分がとても大事になります。

昔から着物職人は、着物に興味深い柄を施してきました。平安時代以前には、複雑な模様の織物が中国や他の国から輸入されています。平安時代になると、絞り染めで模様を染めたり、銀や金の染料で模様を描いたりするようになりました。いつの時代にも職人たちは、新しい模様や新しい染織法によっていかに職人としての腕を発揮するか考えてきました。

着物の柄にならないものはない

花鳥風月は、季節を表す代表的な文様ですが、職人たちはそれだけにとどまりません。動物や野菜、果物、さらには楽器や扇子といった人が造った物まで、あらゆるものが着物に描かれてきました。

着物に文字を染めたり刺繍を施すこともあります。手紙も絵になりました。江戸時代は、和歌や俳句だったかもしれませんが、後にはチームや商品の名前にもなりました。

無地の着物であっても、生地に模様が織り込まれていることが多いものです。着物の柄にならないものはほとんどありません。素敵な柄がいっぱいですね。

男性羽織の中に広がる秘密世界

着物の素晴らしい柄は、表面にたくさんあるだけでなく、帯や長襦袢や羽織の内側など、見えないところにもあります。着物の柄のすべてを見ることができないのは、とても興味深いといえます。その中には他の人の目には触れないものもあります。私の所持している長襦袢には、素晴らしい絞りの柄があります。しかし、その存在を知っているのは私だけです。風が吹けばチラッと見えてしまうかもですけれどね。

女性の羽織の裏地には色とりどりの花柄が入っていたりしますが、私がより興味を惹かれてしまうのが男性羽織です。昔の羽織には、戦争シーンや飛行機の絵、競馬の馬券が描かれているものなどもあるんですよ。男性の着物というと外見的には飾り気がありませんが、裏地には趣味絵や遊興図、婦人画や車両など、男性が好きそうなプライベートな世界が隠されています。

着物は平面ですが、着物の美しさにおいて2次元的ではなく、3次元的であることが私にとっては魅力的なんです。見えない場所に秘密のデザインが隠されていることもまた、着物というもののすごくおもしろい特徴かもしれませんね。

One of the things I really love about kimono is that it is full of patterns. 50 or 60 years ago everyone wore florals and other patterns but now fast fashion is almost all plain. These days patterns are seen on Hawaiian shirts but not much else. Because kimono does not change much in shape, the surface area is very important. From ancient times kimono artisans have been putting interesting patterns on kimono. From before the Heian period complex patterned weaves were imported from China and other countries. In the Heian period they began to dye patterns with tie-dyeing, and also paint patterns in silver and gold paint. In every age, artisans have thought about how to show their skills through new patterns and new dyeing and weaving techniques. Flowers, birds and scenery are typical patterns, through which the seasons are often revealed, but artisans did not stop there. All kinds of animals, vegetables and fruit, even man-made objects such as musical instruments and fans are found on kimono. Sometimes letters are dyed or embroidered onto kimono. Letters became pictures. In the Edo period they might be songs or poems, but later they could be the name of a team or even a product. Plain kimono often have a design woven into the cloth. There is almost nothing that cannot become a design on a kimono. They are full of amazing patterns.

Not only are kimono full of wonderful patterns, but so are obi and even the parts of the garment that are not seen, such as nagajuuban and the insides of haori. I think it is very interesting that we cannot see all the patterns on kimono. Some of them are private. I have some beautiful nagajuuban with wonderful shibori patterns on them. Only I know that they are there. Someone can catch a glimpse if the wind blows! Sometimes women’s haori have colourful flowered patterns on the linings, but I am most interested in men’s haori. I have some old ones with pictures of war scenes and planes, and betting tickets for horse races. While men’s kimono tend to be very plain on the outside, they hide a private world showing hobbies, games, women and vehicles, things that men are interested in. It is fascinating to me that kimono beauty is not 2 dimensional, but 3 dimensional, even though the kimono itself is flat. Having designs hidden in secret places is perhaps one of the unique and amazing  things about kimono.
