通過儀礼を祝う文化

着物研究家のシーラ・クリフです。

日本の生活の素晴らしいことのひとつとして、人生のさまざまな段階で行われる通過儀礼があります。これらの儀式は、人々を自分のルーツや祖先と結びつけ、家族が集ってお祝いする機会となります。

先月、大宮の氷川神社で行われた七五三のお祝いに、色とりどりの着物を着た小さな子供たちが歩いてくるのを見かけて、とてもほっこりしました。両親の嬉しそうな顔が目に浮かび、孫が慕っているおじいちゃんやおばあちゃんも、その（孫の）無邪気な光景を楽しんでいました。また、成人式の写真を撮っている女の子もいましたよ。

その日お姫様にするパワー

振袖はとても美しい衣装ですね。確かに振袖で実用的な仕事をするのはちょっと難しそう。長く揺れる袖は装飾のためのもので実用性はありません。ですが、振袖には女の子をその日お姫様にするパワーがあります。

私の教え子たちは、成人の日の何ヶ月も前から母親と一緒に着物を選び、写真を撮りに行ったことを私に報告してくれます。彼女たちにとってこうした美しい着物を着ることは、とても特別なことですからね。振袖はご両親が選び、愛情を込めて娘さんに贈ります。縁起の良いデザインは娘さんに幸福と幸運をまとわせるためのものです。彼女たち皆、成人の日に懐かしい友と会い、振袖のデザインや色、どう選んだのかについておしゃべりするのを楽しみにしています。

大人のための振袖

私は、結婚式や写真撮影で振り袖を着ることがあります。着るのが大好きなんですもの。とても特別な感じがしますしね。振袖は留袖と同様にあまり使用されませんが、これは残念なことです。母親が振り袖を出して、娘と一緒に着ることもあります。

大人の女性のための振袖を考えている着物工房があります。振袖というもののとらえ方が変わります。イブニングドレスのようなイメージで、より落ち着いたスタイリッシュなデザインに仕上げられています。とても素敵なアイデアだと思いますし、いつかこんなおしゃれな振袖が着られるといいですね。

石巻の振袖ボランティア

東日本大震災の津波被害の後、ボランティアの人が石巻の女の子に振袖を寄付するために結集しました。家に帰れない女の子や施設暮らしの女の子が、成人したときに振袖を着られるようにするボランティア・グループもありました。私は、すべての女性に振袖を着るチャンスがあるべきだと思いますので、すべての女性にとって日本がより公平となるためにも、こうした活動に協力させていただいたことを嬉しく感じています。

新年のご多幸とご健勝をお祈りするとともに、皆様が2022年1月10日に素敵な成人式を迎えられることを願っています。

One of the wonderful things about Japanese life is the rites of passage that people go through at different stages of their lives. These rituals connect people with their roots, and ancestors, and they are a chance for families to get together and celebrate. Last month it was a pleasure to watch little ones in their colourful kimono walking up to Hikawa Jinja in Omiya for their 7,5,3 celebrations. I could see the happy looks on the parents’ faces, and saw adoring grandmas and grandpas also enjoying the cheerful sight. There were several girls there taking photographs for their coming-of-age ceremonies too.

The furisode is a beautiful garment. It has the power to turn a girl into a princess for a day. Indeed, it would be impossible to do any practical work in a furisode, the long waving sleeves are all about decoration and not practicality. My students sometimes tell me months before the day, about going with their mothers to choose a kimono and take some photographs. It is such a special occasion for them to wear such a beautiful kimono. The furisode is chosen by the parents and given with all their love, to their daughters. The celebratory designs are to clothe their daughters in happiness and good luck. They are all looking forward to seeing their old friends on coming-of-age day, and one of the subjects of their conversation will be about their furisode and the designs, colours and how they chose it.

I have occasionally worn a furisode for a wedding or to take a photograph. I love wearing it. I feel so special in it. Furisode, like tomesode are not often used, and this is a shame. Sometimes mothers get out their furisode and wear them with their daughters. Kimono makers are also thinking about furisode for grown women. They have a new way to think about furisode. They think of it like an evening dress and they create more subdued and stylish designs for evening wear. I think it is a wonderful idea, and I hope that one day I will be able to wear such a stylish furisode.

Volunteers gathered after the tsunami to donate furisode to girls from Ishinomaki. There are also volunteer groups who make sure that girls who can’t go home or girls from orphanages can wear a furisode at their coming-of-age. I feel that every girl should have this chance so I am happy to help with that work to make Japan fairer for all girls. I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year, and I hope everyone coming-of-age has a wonderful coming-of-age day on January 8^th.
