黒留袖はもっとも美しい着物の一つ

いつの日か、結婚式や重要なセレモニーで黒留袖を着るのが夢です。というのも、黒留袖は、金箔と刺繍で飾られた美しい友禅染で、完璧に飾られたもっとも美しい着物の一つだからです。これらの着物は家紋が付いていることから、日本ではリサイクル価値が低いとされていて、古着屋でも安く買えます。しかしその美しさこそが外国人にとっては魅力的で、西洋風のドレスやスカートを作るために使用されたり、お土産としても喜ばれます。デザイン好きな外国人の中にはコレクションしている人もいるほどです。

思い思いに着こなせば誰もがクール

私は、これまで黒留袖を結婚式や披露宴で着る機会がほぼ皆無でした。多くの着物愛好家は、黒留袖がクローゼットの中に仕舞い込まれたまま着られずにいるのがもったいないと考えています。そんな折、私は黒留袖を着ていくパーティーに何度か出席しました。そこでは男性も女性も、お互いの黒留袖を称えたり、家紋について語り合いました。中には、伝統的な方法で黒留袖を着ている方々もいましたが、私は、もっと別の方法で楽しむチャンスだと思いました。私はブーツと赤い長襦袢に黒留袖を短くして着用してみました。男性の中にも、ローブように羽織ったままであったり、ベルトで締めただけの状態で黒留袖を楽しんでいる人もいました。黒留袖の着方としては正統派とは言えませんが、とてもクールなひとときだったのです。誰もが黒留袖をクールに着こなすことができるのです。

美しいものすべては黒留袖の中に…

友禅染は黒の地色映えが素敵ですが、黒留袖が特別な理由はそれだけではありません。黒留袖は、幸運、長寿といった美の表現の宝庫です。私たちはそこに、冬の松竹梅や、長寿を意味する鶴と亀といった縁起物を発見できます。他にも、宝船、仲睦まじいおしどりや美しい文様なども見つけることができます。季節の花々、波、流水、雲、山といった森羅万象、自然の中のステキなものすべてが、すべからく黒留袖の柄になっています。黒留袖は、結婚式や披露宴の新郎新婦およびその参列者の輝かしい生活を願う気持ちを、美の世界として表現しているのですね。

It is a dream to one day be able to wear a kurotome sode at a wedding or at an important ceremony. Kurotome sode are some of the loveliest of kimono, where beautiful yuzen dyeing embellished with gold leaf and embroidery are displayed to perfection. As these kimono have family crests, they don’t have a high recycle value for Japanese. They can be bought cheaply in used clothing shops. Their beauty makes them attractive to non-Japanese as souvenirs and sometimes they are used to make western style dresses and skirts. Many people in other countries collect them because they like the designs.

I have never had the chance to wear a kurotome sode to a wedding or ceremony, but many kimono lovers think it is a shame that they are kept in the closet and never worn. I have attended several kurotome sode parties. Both men and women enjoy dressing up in kurotome sode and viewing each others’ kimono and discussing all of the family crests. Some people wear kurotome sode in the conventional way, but I think it is a chance to wear it in a different way. I have worn it shorter with boots and a red nagajuban. Some men wear it as a kimono, but some men wear it as an over robe, loose or just held with a belt. This way of wearing a kurotome sode is unusual, but it looks very cool. Everyone can look cool in a kurotome sode.

Yuzen dyeing looks stunning on a black background, but that is not the only reason they are special. Kurotome sode are full of beautiful expressions of good fortune, luck and longevity. Of course we can find the three lucky friends of winter, pine, bamboo and plum, and the long-lived crane and turtle. We can also find treasure ships, mandarin ducks that mate for life and beautiful fans. The seasons and the natural world are also commonly featured, so there are seasonal flowers, waves, flowing water, clouds and mountains, everything lovely in nature can be found in kurotome sode. Kurotome sode display a beautiful world to reflect our desires for a beautiful life for the bride, groom and participants of the lovely wedding ceremony.
